tomorrow the pups leave us and Bea to go and live with Deb, we know they will be in good hands so we're being positive and seeing it as an adventure for them, Naomi is going to be the boss for the day to make sure they're happily settled before she leaves them, she's kind of Grandma to them seeing as Bea is her dream dog come true :-)
3 weeks old today while they are sleeping Bea has a rest and watches them from the comfort of a chair and as soon as they start to murmer she goes back to the box and you can see her doing a head count, then if one is missing she checks to see who is having a sneaky cuddle and quite clearly lets us know it is time for them to return to the box :) Then before she settles to feed them we give them a little taste of goats milk porridge, she licks them clean and then they all have a drink from her and lick each other before they crash for another sleep - talk about a dogs life. At night when all has gone calm they all curl in the box happy together and seem to sleep longer now they have fuller bellies.

On saturday my sister came back from egypt, she went on holiday before Bea had the pups so none of her family have seen them yet. My neice Danielle is one of Bea's number one fans and so annoyed to be missing seeing the pups tiny, she was soooo keen to get here and see them, it was the first thing she asked when she got out of the car..
They arrived at 1.30, Danielle ran for the kitchen, our Jack followed her, he has Down's is 7 and soooo cute Lynne brought flowers, well what else do you do when there is a new mum in the house lol I shan't say anymore, the pics speak for themselves :-)
first pic - puppies scrambling for Bea's boobs lol in fact this morning I didn't get a pic of it, but some of the pups were standing up to reach her better.

I got the pestle out and ground some oats up, mixed in the goats milk, cooked it in the microwave for a couple of mins, put the saucer in the box and wow ........... see em go, they all went after the smell, I had to dib my fingers in to get them sucking , but then they mobbed it :-) I did do it at the beginning of a feed with Bea so I knew they were hungry.

They soon were searching for more and sucking porridge from each others ears and fur lol It had all gone , I made some more ...........

We gave them some more. Naomi even interrupted baking a cake to watch them. With a bit of moving them towards the smell and dibbing my fingers into it and then into their mouths they were eager again.....

They ate the lot and Bea licked the plate clean lol They kind of fell off the plate and went straight to sleep, just like they do when they fall off Bea and sleep after a feed, so they muist have had nice full tummies.
Just had to share this picture of the view I wake up to in a morning - the smiley one in next to me , first in the picture is our Canned Heat, Bea bless her and the lovely blonde mop is my husband Stef :-) What a pair !

I'm really thrilled that Bea is having babies :-) Stef and I have had 4 miscarriages in the last four years and have now given up on having any human babies :-/ so little black four legged babies will be a real treat for us! Bea gets spoiled as it is , I can see loads more fussing and cuddling coming up , our girls will be so delighted. 2 weeks on Friday and counting - eek, how marvellous.

Notts and Derby Show - critique for Bea

Deb sent me the critique about Bea from the Notts and Derby Show which was Dec , wow I Stef, Me and the kids are just so thrilled with her.

critique from the show

1st Saunt Canned Heat .d/brindle , top quality classy bitch , strong but feminine & well balanced throughout .Great body shape with clean flowing lines sound construction & movement correct length of limbs & angulations nice reach of neck , lovely head proportions & maximum strength for me , good length muzzle & strong underjaw which is on show large well set teeth plenty through stop , well set dark eyes & tidy ears Beat some really good specimens today & it was nice to hear I gave her BPB potteries last time out .BB & BIS.

2ND Foster & McDonald Tusselstaff Black Fury ,d/brindle another top class bitch similar to junior winner , super straight front & up on her toes , attractive height to weight ratio & in hard condition , much the same virtues as first with a little less through the stop , & rear pads set a shade more rearward which decided a finicky call.

3rd Metcalfe, Dark ridge Contradiction.

christmas and snow

Off she went with Deb early this morning, along with some other Alport dogs , it's a bit nerve wracking sending her off on her journey, but exciting too. Our minds were on Christmas stuff and getting son home from uni stuff,
the day was speeding along when the phone went. On the phone was a
miserable sounding voice, it was Deb "awww we haven't had a very good
day, not done much, Bea only got Best In Show!!!" how do I type a
scream I'm not sure lol but I squealed and laughed and yelled OMG Best In Show
........................over the moon we are , over the moon!! Hope to
have some good photos soon to post , but here are a few of our snaps

Yet again the much loved staffy is under the firing line to be put on the dangerous dogs act register.. this is one of the most loving friendly dogs that anyone could ever own and like with all breeds it the way they are treated that makes a dog who it is and not just a breed. because its a staffy and not a cute little corgi [who have a nasty bite] why should this dog face a unhappy life of discrimination. sign this to keep our much loved staffys from being classed as dangerous. and invite mr brown to my home to see my staffy.

please go here http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/staffys/#details to sign the petition and help our lovely, friendly, devoted Staffies and keep them off of this list.

Well we set off for the Potteries open dog show with Bea. Once there we watched some dog classes and then it was Bea's turn in the puppy class and you'll never believe it, though we think she's the very best It was a big surprise as the judge went up to her and gave her first. Later on she was invited into the ring and won best puppy bitch in the show. We're so pleased.
Deb's Sal got first in Open Bitch and then first reserve best bitch in the show so all in all we did really well.

Snuggling

We're still all smiling from the show and so pleased about her. Yesterday they walked and played for ages, we were in one of our favourite spots and we were enjoying the shade and playing catch n chase and just running stuff, today we've just been doing melting stuff, saw a lovely pool post of dogs swimming on BBO, wish we had a big pool, think a new paddling pool might be at least a little bit the same lol.
How is it that any food of human variety is relished by Bea and yet food of the dog kind is kind of just a necessity which she doesn't seem to enjoy?

Bea's first show

Well here are some pics of the show, because we didn't really think Bea would do much we didn't take the camera , just my phone, but here are a few glimpses at the puppy category. Some of them were just so cute and tiny. Bea won though and we are still thrilled today lol
and then on this last one she is being presented with a nice red monkey for winning , bless, she has taken no notice of it what so ever.
Today Bea seemed more grown up for her experience, she seems even more smiley if that's possible. She did chase the cats a bit today but they seem unbothered if there is such a word.
Later in the day today when it had cooled a bit we all went for a walk in a nearby wood and we took Bea's friend Chelsea aswell, it's good because then she has a run, with just us she doesn't do enough to use all her energy up. Funnily enough Bea is nearly as tall as Chelsea now, she wasn't even nearly her size at all the first time we took them out together.
Today she had Arden grange complete food and troughed it down with relish, lol she loves everything at first taste then after a few days starts to turn up her nose. Anything with butter on seems best favourite . . . . . . mustn't let her get fat.

her first show and she won

Click photo to see fullsize :o)

Well there we go , what a thing. Naomi and Lana came along with Bea to the village carnival where there was a dog show. We entered Bea to best puppy and she came first , Lana took her in the ring and was thrilled as were we all. Old novice here thought she'd got 3rd until Lana came out with the rosette saying first :o)

Well there were such cute little puppies in there all fluffy and cute , but biased we liked Bea the best, but then when the judges did too we were as proud as we have ever been if the kids win something. My mum was so pleased she cried - shhh don't let her know i told you :o)

As if that wasn't enough they asked for Bea to go into the best in show and she won first reserve - OMG that's 2nd in the show and she is only four and a half months old and there was about 100 dogs in the show and our young Bea came first reserve , second and we got a trophy - woo our Connor won trophies with his Karate, now Bea is , eek.

Looks like Bea is doing us all some good, for starters she's getting me /us out of the house and making us walk a long way because without the walk she has too much energy to cope with, and apart from all her delightful ways she is also making us proud and thrilled.

We wanted a real baby, but our new fourlegged baby is really good for all of us, and we're all totally besotted.

by the way about 18 wks now but already more intelligent and learning everything faster than any hound i've ever had.

shut up dawny, i do sound like a proud mum don't I - well we're all so thrilled.

Bea, Camera, Sun . . . . I might mind going out in the rain as I hide under my brolly but Bea didn't mind in the slightest, we strolled down to the pony gate in the rain with Charlotte and her dog Buddy, well you met him last post. So there they were playing in the rain like it was a sunny day.
At one point Bea kept diving over the top of Buddy as if he was a hurdle, she kept jumping from the top of a big bank onto the grass at the bottom, life is such fun with the smallest of things, you can see her just delighting in it all. No camera with us again today.
After that we went to auntie Debs to play with Nelly and Tag and Bea did a bit of standing properly and having her teeth looked at, the look on her face was quite mardy, put out lol she's got to get used to it though, it'll be so nice if she does well.
Anyway back home after lots of play with gran Nel and uncle Tag Bea and Ted had their tea and wolfed every bit, and later on they had a few chips (sshhh) and collapsed on my bed asleep as if she'd done 20 miles instead of lots of play.
awwww so besotted, she is just one of the best things we've ever done, one of the closest friends we've known , , ,. . . broody - yes I am.

4 months old - or too quick for the camera

Yesterday we had a lovely time out with our friend Charlotte and her dog Buddy who you can see with his big smile here :

You could almost hear him going "ahah pup you can't get me lol". so as he kept coming up inbetween times and saying hello we had a good pic of him .
The following pics are of Bea who was just too excited and dashing around to be caught properly on camera.
Here she is in full action

At the river it seemed Ted had lost all sense and kept hanging over the edge, Bea was rather wary but she loved it, she wasn't sure about going over the bridge and she seemed very interested in the water but between them they managed not to fall in.
Bea was 4 months old yesterday.
yet again forgot to take the blinking camera.

3 pics of Bea -

She asked if I had a space , or would want a pup. Instantly I knew I wanted her, but I did the adult thing and said I'd talk to Stef and think for a while. I can't remember how soon , but I think the next morning I rang Deb and I was soooo hoping the pup wouldn't be gone, she wasn't she was still there :o) Deb told me all about her and about Cliff who sent me some pics. By the end of the week we had our darling Bea. I cannot say how besotted we are, and how unprepared we were to find ourselves totally bowled over. She's so intelligent and loving and just super scrummy. Here she is :o)

They were both my best friends, they went everywhere with me. Both Nipper and Kyla lived to the grand old ages of 16 and having to part with them is still really vivid in my head.
I didn't think I'd have another dog , but the house got lonelier and quieter without a dog in it so we had Ted and then we had Cassie, Cass was already kind of middle aged when we rescued her, she was a real darling. we've had Ted 6 years now and we had Cassie for about 5 years, we lost her to cancer a short while ago.
here they are

It was really herd letting Cass go but she suddenly went down hil fast and we couldn't see her suffer.
We did the usual , not having another dog, can't replace Cassie. But again the house was empty again, nobody to give the left overs to.
We started looking for another friend for Ted. If you read the previous dog posts you'll find that Ted had a stroke 2years ago and he's still a special boy but quite lively inspite of remaining lack of feeling in his back legs.

update

Ted was quiet and I was really vigilant expressing his bladder , he stopped bleeding wthin that night and seems to be fine since , my what a scare ! Anyway we've had it as a routine for a good while now , and Lana has managed to take over most of the expressing because now once he starts going he can carry on, she's thrilled to be helping with him. I thought we would be carrying on like this for a good long while, but i think that would have been the easy option and I should know life is never easy. A couple of weeks ago I realised Ted was using his back left leg less and less , holding it in the air as if something was hurting, he's been unsteady on his feet, even more like Bambi than usual. If I think about it his bladder has been leaking more too. Tonight we came home after shopping (I have new high heel shoes and feel very frivolous) we were all in high spirits and having fun , we'd had some little treats, then we realised Ted had dribbled a lot and he was panting, walking even more wobbly. I took him out to wee, he wouldn't let his bladder relax, I held him how i usually do and pressed gently , then a little harder, but he would only wee a little bit. I took him inside where Lana settled him in his basket, then she screamed "Mum what have you done ? He's bleeding! Why is he bleeding mum?" well wouldn't it be good to know the answer to that one wouldn't we just like to know! Blood was dripping our of his little willie there was blood on his bed . I took him out , I expressed again , he weed this time but there was blood. why on earth blood? poor Ted. He's not lost his appetite at all, he seems quite well, he's been to the loo since and it was clear , no blood, he passed it ok but inspite of that improving he's panting more than the weather needs. I don't mind admitting that i'm scared , we'll watch him and take him to the vets tomos if there's any sign that he is still ill. He's asleep now , I expressed him before he went to sleep and it was still clear . . . . . so fingers crossed . . . . we'd got used to Ted's legs not working properly , it just makes him all the more endearing as he bops through life looking like bambi on ice. . . . . but an ill ted, a deteriating Ted, well I din't even consider, him not getting better or coping with his disability has never been an option we could bear.

How is Ted going on now, well i wrote a very detailed catch-up post and blogger ate it so i'll try again.
After Ted's few faltering steps on fiona's grass he made progress, little by little he used his back legs more, little by little more confident at pulling himself along by his front legs like a silver back gorilla, while his back legs follow behind looking like bambi on ice. Ted is now a very happy little lad, he was scared at first because he couldn't feel his back end and was in a lot of pain , but now though he still can't feel his back end he seems to have accepted it. He is able to walk his back legs just seem to follow along at half the speed of his front ones, if we pick him up while he is walking then his back legs carry on pedalling in mid air.
At feeding time Ted can now eat on his own , he has to be standing on a firm surface that isn't shiny because shiny surfaces make him fall over, and if he is sitting his back legs stick through his front legs and kick his food away.
In some ways Ted is easier to look after than when he was a very troublesome pup, Ted has always taken every opportunity to run away, to explore without us is his delight. With Ted's back legs out of action he can no longer escape, he has managed a couple of times to escape through the gate if it has been left open, once even managing to bark at an old white haired lady, he only barks at people who have white hair (that's another story). Before his stroke Ted would scale any height fence, he would find a way through, under or over any obstacle, escape was his life. We had to resort to a running lead on a washing line so he could visit the garden but not escape from it, no amount of fencing in or bribary helped to keep him at home. He can now drag with back legs managing to keep up and he can be surprisingly nippy but he can no longer climb so his escape days are over.
He did one day manage to escape into our nice neighbours garden and he was sitting under her trampoline with a big lolling tongue out grin looking so pleased with himself.

Our nippy little Ted although he now has some use of his back legs he cannot feel them and has no control over his bladder or bowel, this has meant that I have to express his bladder about 4 or 5 times a day also having to express his bowel when he wakes in the morning and before he goes to bad at night; we have a steady routine now and he knows what and when, never thought i'd end up taking Ted to pooh on my loo, we've found it easier than outside because it falls straight into the loo water and is flushed straight away. After going to the loo he has a shower and i have a good wash with carex, as you can imagine it is quite a responsibility, he can't go to the loo without me, we have had to become very very good friends. Funny how some things work out , we lost the baby and have had to look after Ted like a baby. We hope that as looking after him gets easier then we might get lucky again and get pregnant - that of course does not involve Ted. What with him and our hand reared cat my time is in hot demand., maybe Stef and I can manage a few seconds lol

Lataer on in the he hot up and walked/staggered to his food bowl , we all looked at each other in case it's a fluke. Then from having a drink in the kitchen om the slippery tils he quite clearly walked to stef walking with each back leg in little shakey steps , as soon as he realised what he was doing he toppled and fell over . My gosh is this real? When he stands now he stands pads down not knucles down,.

Doesn't she look so happy to still have him and he looks so thrilled to still be here.
Lana really can't wait for Ted to be well enough to be on wheels, he has some harder moments but otherwise being a 'no back legs doggy' seems to be quite manageable and even easier than being a run off doggy? I'm so very pleased for them both and amazed at how well Ted is adjusting to this slower being picked up life style.

september 8th:naughty Ted and the stairs

This morning Naomi as usual got up early , Ted was lying fast asleep on his sleeping bag at the bottom of my bed. Ted is a busy little dog, but in a morning he's a lazy little dog and we have to get him all excited with the day before he will even move.
"Mum can I go downstairs ? Can I put the tele on , can i have breakfast , can i have a cuddle ? are you getting up? " Naomi's normal torrent of questions and chatter came at me , "yes, yes, yes do whatever you like darling. She chuckles and runs full pelt thud thud down the stairs, I often wonder how little people can make so much noise on the stairs!
Next thing I hear is another clatter followed by squeals from Naomi then Lana. Ted has seen fit to get up early today, he can't feel his bladder so it wasn't cos he wanted a wee, but he wanted to join in with Naomi; it looks as if he hoisted himself up on his front legs and off he'd gone! He has got used to the fact that his back legs will drag and follow - errrr yes they will , but on the stairs? On the stairs , his back end fell and his front end went after, all the way from the top to the bottom, landing nicely in the litter tray apparently. It's a good job the cats never use that one (it's only there in case they get shut the wrong side of the stairs door).
Poor Ted, a rather more frantic start to the day than normal, crying and in a flap the girls fuss over him - I guess he's learnt now that is back end is too floppy for the stairs, so much for him resting.

This afternoon we took Ted to the park with the girls and Cassie (our other dog) he loved the fuss, he loved walking with Lana supporting his back legs. He loved barking at every single dog on the park , he barked at two very large staffordshire terriers - erm Ted may feel brave in the face of large and dangerous , but he's forgotten though he might take them on he is no longer nifty enough to run away!!

sept 6th : The Naughty Ted Stories

Ted has been such a darling this last couple of days, he is bouncing back to his former happy self he has been sharing his thoughts with any passing cat and has told them to watch out he'll be even more trouble even with the legs missing.
Some people seem to wonder if it's fair for him to live this way, well Ted has told me that just cos of paralyzed legs he doesn't want to be put down!!! How dare any humans even think it !! would youlike to be put down if you had poorly legs? He asks.
Now Ted has been doing press ups and building up his front leg muscles, he is aiming to be as strong as a silver back gorilla, scared of silly not working legs - humph not Naughty Ted, when anyone looks his way he acts rather blazé about it all.
We are already in a routine of going to the loo (how awful having to go to the loo in front of my gran, she thinks she's doing it all - but you just watch I'll soon be doing it on my own!) and expressing his bladder and his bowel.
Hey now he wanders around while we hold his back legs for him, he wanders around without us sometimes so we've had to start putting him in his cage with a bed in it to keep him still if we are busy so he can't damage his back any further - much to his horror, he's planning a jail break with 'Who Ate All The Pies' his favourite cat allie. I've seen them plotting when I'm not looking.
Ted is no longer scared of the fact that he can't feel his back end, it's almost as if he has always been this way (and with a sad face it gets lots of fuss from all the ladies! It's good for a fuss and a treat or two!), as if he can't remember having 4 working legs.
We have also changed his pain relief on to aspirin(cheapskates aren't they these adults - act as if they care - Pah!), we read that it is good for pain relief in dogs; he only needs an eighth of a tablet and it totally relaxes him just as much as the rimadyl did. He doesn't seem in pain now , he has his aspirin twice a day and sometimes his muscles are a bit stiff and he trembles a bit when he is ready for his next tablet, within 15mins of taking it he is as relaxed as can be. It's a lot cheaper than the vets and it doesn't seem to be having any adverse reaction on his stomach either. (Ted still says he needs extra fuss and lots of ladies pampering him though).

Lana wants to do a sponsored climb to raise money to buy Ted a doggy wheelchair, something like these dogmobile.com we are looking to find the best wheels for him(though I've had to disappoint him about the stretched limo with cocktail bar), we can't get them yet because we still don't know if he will recover or not , but that's the next thing in a week or so :)

sept 02nd day15 : gosh he ran off

Well what a tinker is Ted, today I was on the phone to my mum , the back door open , my friends little girl left the garden gate open. Next thing I see is my friends little girl walking down the drive with Ted in her arms.
I guess that Ted had sensed the gate was open , he must have heard that she didn't shut it , he ignored the fact that his back legs don't work and had gone running after her ! I hadn't seen or heard him , I thought he was still asleep on his sleeping bag under the table! Let that be a lesson to us , he might have back legs that don't work but my goodness his front legs are now making up for it. He always enjoys catching the gate open and I guess having a poorly back end doesn't stop him wanting to have fun like he usually does! - we'll have to get a lock for the gate because it's easy for people to think Ted can't run around anymore, well no he can actually run but we're trying to not let him , we're doing our best to make him rest.

aug 31st 13th day: scurry

Well it has been a good day today , it's almost routine now to express Ted's bladder. I'm so proud of him ! I bet you've all heard enough about Ted's toileting habits lol
Today he's been a bit of a tinker really , he should still be resting, he should still be lying still , but if anything takes his fancy he throws himself from his rug or pillow or the futon and scurries wherever he wants to be , his legs dragging behimd him or holding them inbetween his front legs and bottom shuffling. I've sat him down and had a friendly caht about how to get his back better he needs to rest and take it easy but he just won't seem to listen to me , well he seems to listen but then does as he pleases. We need now to be careful to not leave him alone on the futon because he throws himself off it and he could easily make his injuries worse. I think it might be time to get his cage out , he likes it as a den anyway but if we need to take our
eyes off him for a while at least we would know he was safe and not going to hurt himself.
I have been explaining to Lana that he needs leaving a little bit sometimes , she cannot spend the next however long sitting by Ted's side pampering and caring for him, she needs a bit of life herself too.
Today we popped to see our neighbouring friend and only planned to be half an hour , as we left the front room to go to the door Ted scurried to Lana and looked all forlorn at her , that was it she picked him up and went to sit with him again "I just can't leave him mum!" . My concern is that Ted will fret when she does finally leave his side a bit , she needs to get him used to it in small doses, he doesn't seem scared of his lack of legs anymore so the odd little amount of time on his own would be good, she's 11 and needs to be doing her stuff too, even if only for a few minutes, she hardly dare go to the loo.

august 30th day 12 : Things are looking a bit better

Lana is over the moon. Ted has a teddy bear that he sucks and chews and since his stroke he hasn't wanted to play with it, today Lana gave him the teddy and he shook it and chewed it , he was almost smiling and Lana deffinately was smiling. It's such a relief after him being such a sad doggy.
Even if he doesn't improve anymore than he already has then we'll be happy, his pain seems to have gone and his front end is smiling and playing and he can pee and poo more easily than he did. I'm amazed at him , he seems to just accept that his back end does't work.
The problem now is trying to keep him rested and still so he doesn't do any more damage.
The chicken broth is a real wonder and got everything moving!! thank you to the lovely people on handicapped pets.com for telling us about it.

Tuesday 29th day 11: a day of firsts

Well I never doesn't life just astound you? Things never cease to amaze me !
Today Ted came outside with me to wee and it was so easy to express him , gentle firm pressure and there we were done ! I could feel his bladder being properly empty. Then later on today he tried to get out of his bed, Lana picked him up and he started weeing, we took him outside and with a little expressing help he did a full pee in the same way he used to, you know how male dogs go squirt squirt squirt. I was so thrilled.
Then Ted just lowered his back end and pooed too! Yes he used his bowels all on his own!!! Hey I never though I would be so thrilled with Ted going for a poo.

After that later on I turned round and he had left his bed - never offered to do that before, he'd gone into the kitchen and in his usual style he had knocked the bin over and was stealing the chicken carcass lol , he had scooted along on his front legs and was sitting there with his back legs through his front legs and smiling at me, still no sign of a wag but he looked so chuffed that he had managed to be naughty - guess what I was thrilled too - I never thoguth I'd see him raid the bin again!!
Oooooh happy day!!

Monday 28th Day 10 :evening

Ted's holding on to his bladder again , Cindi on handicapped pets said she thinks that it's what she call bladder tone, the sphincter is holding tight and it makes it hard to express him, she says there are some drugs which help to make it easier for the sphincter to relax and therefore for the bladder to be expressed, I think something like that would be a help.
In himself Ted seems quite well today but expressing remains a challenge for us.
Muscularly his back legs are getting more rigid especial in movement around the hips and he can't relax them at all, we keep manipulating them but it doesn't seem to help much.

It did the trick, he drank and drank and then let me express loads out of his bladder again and he's still going easily today. I think he was just feeling a bit too poorly to drink plain water, he went crazy about the chicken though lol I think it has given him some interest in life again bless him. I'm so relieved.
Caring for Ted isn't physically tiring but it is so emotionally exhausting and worrying.

Lana says to remind anyone reading that Ted is her doggy! He missed her really badly when she was away at the weekend, I'm sure that added to his slump too, he seems quite cheerful today.

Here they are together, we've made a little den under the table for Ted so he doesn't feel so vulnerable when he isn't in there the cats steal his place though, it's in hot demand lol. While he is resting we lie him on a pampers care mat, luckily his sphincter on his bladder seems to be paralyzed closed so he doesn't leak anyway.

Sunday 27th day 9:

Well I sounded really positive yesterday and then by last night I was worrying, I've failed pathetically to get Ted to do any decent amount of wee, and today he has still done very little. He hasn't drunk very much either. I'm leaving him for a big sleep and then we'll have another go. I think the more stressed I am the more stressed he gets and the less pee he does.
It's a real stress today, I jiust feel so tired and helpless and so sorry for him.

Saturday 26th Day 8 : left him for a bit

Today we went out in the car and left Ted quite comfortable having just expressed his bladder, fed and watered him and got him settled on some comfortable pillows. We didn't go for long, just a little bit. When we got home he was still looking comfortable and as if he had been asleep. It was a comfort to think yes he is ok for short times without our company, it gave us time to go to the shops, somehow it seems harder to leave him for a bit now than when he was mobile.
His appetite doesn't seem to have been quite so good today, Lana has gone away for the weekend and I think he's missing her.
Mum rang us to see if we had got Ted sorted with some wheels yet, I guess that is our next job/challenge.
I'm so pleased he is coping with things , he keeps looking at us as if to say "what's going on?" but he doesn't look scared anymore like he did. He has started to drag his back end behind him if he gets determined to go somewhere and he's started trying to sit up too, maybe he is starting to get his balance and is more confident with not being able to feel things with his back legs anymore.
I'm so pleased he's only a little pick upable boy.

Friday 25th Day 7: went to the vets

Today Ted woke up really seeming either scared or in pain I'm not sure which. According to our vet and to what I have read on the net he shouldn't be in pain now; whatever it is he was very stif legged with his neck arched and tense as if he is bracing himself against something. After he had had his tablet (rimadyl) which is anti inflamatory, he seemed to relax and look less scared.
I managed to express his bladder quite easily , I think he was kind of letting go himself and helping me.
We had a calm morning, as long as ted is in the same rom as Lana or myself he seems quite happy to let us busy around a bit now, as long as we stop frequently to give him some attention. I have to express his bladder every time he wakes up from a nap, and if I need a wee myself I express him after I've been, if I'm needing one he probably is needing one too - I'm not sure if there's any logic in there but it seems to have some logic in it to me.
This afternoon we took Ted to the vets, there wasn't a lot the vet could do or say I guess but he charged us another £17.01 I wondered if the one pence was for the pee he expressed from Ted. He asked if I was happy expressing Ted, I said I had learnt a lot from the net and it was a good job I had because we'd not been told anything by the vets last week. We've just got there because we've had to.
Today Ted chose the places he wanted to be in the house, sofa , his bed, under the table on a sleeping bag, when he looks unsettled we've been standing him up, holding his back end clear of the floor and he's shown us where he wants to go, he even took me to the hall door to show me he wanted to go upstairs and then he stood in my room looking up at my bed - well he sure knows what he wants, I feel more tuned into what he's saying than I've ever felt. Normally he would go upstairs and I wouldn't hardly notice, now he's getting me to be his back legs so he's showing me . It's like we're getting a bit psychic with each other.

Thursday 24th day 6: a busy day.

Well today a friend came around , can you adjust this bridesmaid dress for us - it needed quite a lot done to it , and Ted lying at the side of me in his bed he was really brave and let me get on with it. He maneged to wee each time I expressed his bladder and he seemed more comfortable with it , he doesn't tremble so bad now.
He's asleep at the mo , I am waiting for his last pee before we go to bed.
So I get the dress sorted and I managed to look after Ted, and that's it , I'm neglecting everyone and most everything else, it's like in the first few weeks of having a baby when your world revolves around this little soul , so there I go revolving around Ted. I'm hoping the rest of life will start to slot in,and \i'm so impressed he stayed comfy and calm long enough for me to do the dress - I'm just soo wrapped up in him and tired. Stef is keeping the normality of life going, you know food and drink and noticing the children are there. Lana is invaluable too she has been so grown up and responsible towards Ted.

We are at the vets again tomorrow - I'm looking forward to putting them right over his bladder and bowel , I wonder what they will say.

I've joined the forum at Handicapped pets.com - they have all been so kind and helpful - thanks to them I can get Ted to pee , and without that he would have been an even more poorly lad!

tomorrow I'm turning a buggy into Ted's wheels, he is so keen to have a get up and go!I'm going to ask the vet first if he's well enough to go for a wheelie walk yet, it's killing my back bending down and holding his hips with a towel under his tummy, it works but it's high maintenance in terms of my back.

Wednesday 23rd :5 days and exhausted.

I'm absolutely exhausted mentally and I think poor Ted is too, like any trauma our lives are revolving around what has happened at the moment. I can't really imagine this becoming a way of life.
I was so thrilled earlier when I managed to express Ted's bladder with hardly any bother this evening I couldn't express it at all, he ended up doing nothing and panting and I ended up stressed and shaking and worrying about the poor boy. I've left him now for a bit to let the two of us recover. He's lying near my feet on his quilt, it seems so strange him staying still.
A friend asked what would we do if he doesn't get his legs back, many people i've spoken to seem to think we are making him suffer by not having him put down. "He's suffering." said my friend, I explained that many of us go through some awful things but we don't want to lose our lives over it, we like the chance to succeed/triumph over problems, I'm hoping we are giving Ted the chance to triumph , whether he regains his legs or not we will end up making this situation a bearable , hopefully happy one. If we can get Ted in a routine and used to wheels he'll be fine - getting to that stage seems ages away but I'm praying we'll get there eventually.

day 5 : he's looking confused

When I woke up this morning Ted was asleep at the bottom of the bed , he woke when he heard me. He seems puzzled and confused today he keeps looking at us as if to say "What the hell is going on mum? Why are you doing this to me." Last night before he finally settled he started snapping at Stef and Lana, he didn't snap at me but I could see it was in his head. He was just so cheesed off I think and was protceting his back end , he was happy with me stroking his head but I think he is so fed up of me struggling attempts at expressing his bladder that he wants us to just leave him well alone. Anyway this morning I took him downstairs and expressing his bladder was much more successful, he did loads and I managed it without having to press to hard, I must have just found the right spot.
I've found if I curl my fingers up and do it with the flat of my left hand and my curled fingers sideways on my right hand , then I can press without digging my fingers and naiks in him. I feel like doing it with wooly gloves on so I don't hurt him. I'm not even sure if he can feel me touching him at all.
His bowels haven't worked this morning.
Little man keeps trembling , we've just given him his tablets maybe he's woke up very ready for them. He's on Rimadyl for analgesia and reduction of chronic inflamation. It's only twice a day and I think towards the time to take them he gets so he needs them. Bless him.
We feel so protective towards him.

Tuesday 22nd August Day 4 : FCE - Fibrocartilaginous Embolism

Well it's 10.15pm I'm washed out , exhausted and worried. The medical term for what Ted has is FCE - Fibrocartilaginous Embolism. From what I can gather it's when a bit of tissue that spinal discs are made of breaks off and finds it's way into the arteries that supply the spinal chord. Once there it causes a blockage preventing blood and therefore oxygen getting to the spinal chord. The part of the spinal chord affected then dies, resulting in the loss of use in one leg, maybe 2 legs and sometimes also control of the bladder and bowels. FCE is rare occuring in only a small percentage of dogs , normally large dogs - well Ted's beat the odds because he's a small dog.
Apparently recovery depends on how much loss of function there is. Things that are going to go wrong with the dog happen in the first 24 hours so we at least know it isn't going to get worse. But Ted may or may not be able to get any better and we have prepared ourselves for Ted staying as he is now; any improvement is a bonus, his legs and hips moving today may have just been reflex movements and we aren't banking on him developing anymore. We need to find some way for him to move around without us having to carry his back end in a towel, sadly the dog wheelchair things are about £200 each! Stef the kids and me are all coming up now with ides for making Ted a set of wheels.
It seems that any improvement in his paralysis will happen mostly in the first two weeks after the Stroke, we will be watching eagerly just incase he does improve but we won't be banking on it.
I am more confident now with expressing his bladder but it worries me if I can keep him healthy this way, my vet didn't give me any advise because she said he was using his bladder - er no he isn't bless him, he just leaks if left for too long and if it backs up to his kidneys it would kill him. The success at this is paled by the fact he can't use his bowels and I'm struggling to find any info on it.
Lana is so in love with him - we've got to win.
We can't ever say life is boring!
What a very long day.

day 4 afternoon: he lifted his hips

Ted went crazy for some minced beef , he tried to get to it as we were giving it to him and he lifted himself up onto his front legs and lifted his hips, his legs didn't move but he did lift his back end :)
You know we've also noticed that Ted's right eye isn't in line with his left eye now , it wanders out to the side, also even his bark has changed, it's hoarse and higher pitched and weaker. If he decides he wants to go somewhere he just pulls himself along with his front legs. Lana came into my room amd took Ted downstairs to give me a rest, I slept at the bottom of my bed last night so I could reassure him , he seems anxious \i think it's his bowels not sure.
As I came into the front room again he was so excited and as I sat and stroked him he stretched and he moved his back legs, only a tiny bit but he stretched them, Lana and I both saw them move. He has been quite cheery though and has had his ears pricked up at some points of the day.
Early after noon he decided he wanted to walk, he heaved himself up by his front legs and started to go, his back end just trailing on the floor behind him. I got a long towel and put it under his tummy close to his back legs and held the two ends above him so I could take his weight. I followed his lead and he went straight for the front door. Ted might not have the use of his back legs but he sure still wants to go for a walk so off we went just a little way down the road, sniffing at some bushes and walking on the grass while keeping his back feet clear of the floor. Lana had a go too, Ted got into quite a trot with his front legs causing Lana to struggle to keep up with him. I was amazed how keen he was to just do his normal thing, at least we can tell that his head is ok.

On the not so cheerful side It is really hard to express his bladder I am hoping that I am emptying it enough so that he doesn't get an infection through urine staying in his bladder too long. I am feeling rather anxious and scared quite honestly about the fact that his bottom is looking quite swollen and it hasn't been possible to help him pooh really. He has done some but he doesn't seem to have any control of it at all getting quite upset if he accidently does it where he shoudln't. All we can do is reassure him and pray that some function returns in this area for him.

We've also noticed that because he is lying still most of the time he is getting cold (we have since found out that feeling cold is yet another symptom of spinal stroke) so he has taken quite well to lying underneath a shawl to keep him warm. He also has a disposable pampers change mat under him to catch any leaks or accidents.

Friday 18th August - Day 0 : Ted has a spinal stroke

When we got home my sister and my lovely niece and nephew were there with my 3 , I walked through the door , Ted (manchester/lakeland cross terrier) got up to run to me and instantly fell over , he fell off his back left leg. He was in agony and writhing in circles to try and get away from the pain.We rang the pdsa to see if they would see Ted - no they couldn't add him to my list because my cat bobby was still on it (they put bobby down last year!) there was no way , it was more than their job was worth to see us, so we had to go to the private vet hospital. It took us a while to get there , with little Ted in agony and panting and bracing himself against the pain. Finally after some awful wait (by this time ted's foaming at the mouth , dads panick stricken and I'm the calmest one cos I'm on the right medication lol but covered in scratches because of Ted struggling with his front legs) we got into see the vet.
At the back of my mind I am restling with the idea that Ted looks just like my deerhound did when he had a stroke, but surely Ted is too young - he's 4. The vet examines his hips , his leg, his joints , his spine , then his eyes and ears. His back left leg is paralysed. She thinks it's spinal , he needs a myelogram and xrays, he needs to go into the hospital for morphine (well doggy equivalent), in tears we leave him.
Later at home the vet rings, Ted's condition had worsened, now his other back leg was paralysed now too - the surgeon agreed Ted needed a milogram and maybe surgery, should they go ahead? as the cost will be £1,600ish.
I sob , Stef nearly sobs, Lana is out at the baths with my sister to take her mind off it (Ted's her dog she had him for her 7th birthday) so I ring mum. What on earth will we do, it's so much money ,we havent got it , we chat, dad says to give ted every chance we can , go ahead with the treatment, don't let him suffer , they'll pay!
I'll have got rid of a huge chunk of their money all in one day - I'm not comfy or happy with that, but they insist, and Ted needs a chance. I ring the vets and give the all clear - how amazing my parents are - remind me never to grumble about them they're always there in the end and thay haven't got that much money!
Stef and I get down on our knees in the kitchen "God pleeeaaassseee have a hand in this , please get them to find poor Ted doesn't need surgery, because of the traume it will cause Ted, and also the cost to my mum and dad."We wait and wait and wait, Ted has the xrays and myelogram (£300 just for the myelogram and I can't even spell it) we wait for the surgeon to ring.
After what seems like ages the phone goes "the myelogram shows no disc damage , no bone damage , it must be a spinal stroke. A peice of tissue has come off and is stopping the blood supply to the spinal chord, Ted's now paralysed. Surgery can't help it , he can come home on pain treatment and constant care. Nursing him for 6 weeks or so should give him a good chance of recovery. He needs to stay on doggy morphine for today(friday) but he can come home saturday at 4.40. In such a young dog there is a good chance of recovery, phew ….. I really thought we were going to lose him or lose mum and dad's money.
We're exhausted, Lana is scared, it'll be a huge challenge for us front leg stroke was bad enough in my deerhoiund years ago , but back legs . . . . going to the loo. . . ? poor ted , poor us yuk.Life is never boring is it , yesterday I had the tremors and shakes but today I feel calmer - we'll do our best for poor Ted. Poor Lana is well just overwhelmed and worrying like mad.
